The International Regatta Club of Culebra has invited the Caribbean Sailing Association (CSA) to visit Puerto Rico to certify all local boats interested in racing internationally. The CSA operates alongside the world body of sailing, the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and it is the Federation’s “National Member Authority” for the Caribbean.
Mr. Anthony Sanpere is the chief measurer in charge of this visit and he will be supported locally by Jorge Rivera who is being trained to be certified and become the International Regatta Club’s official measurer in the island. “It will be an extraordinary advantage for our Club to have its own chief measurer and one of the first steps in acquiring international status” stated Ángel Ayala, President of the Club and the Culebra Heineken International Regatta’s director.
“The Culebra Heineken International Regatta will be holding its third edition on the 9, 10 & 11th of March but there are two other previous regattas in the Caribbean (St. Croix and St. Martin), so we decided to bring the CSA early enough to enable all participants to be ready to sail the entire season.” added Ayala.
The measuring and certifications will be held at Marina Puerto del Rey in Fajardo on the following dates and all sailors interested in obtaining or updating their certificates are welcome:
2nd of February (Friday) 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
3rd of February (Saturday) 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
4th of February (Sunday) 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The “Club Internacional de Regata” - the first official sailing club based in the island of Culebra - was inaugurated in January.
The third edition of the Culebra Heineken International Regatta and the Culebra International Dinghy Regatta to be held on the 9, 10 and 11th of March 2007 in Culebra, Puerto Rico.
"It is a great honor to be the first official sailing club based in the island of Culebra as well as members of the Federación de Vela de Puerto Rico. Being a part of this Regatta's amazing evolution during the last two years gives us the wind to continue working towards the future." commented Angel Ayala, Director and President of the Regatta since its first edition in 2005. "The International Regatta Club is proud to have FZ Enterprises producing the event which along with Heineken as the mayor sponsor for the second consecutive year are key in establishing Puerto Rico internationally as a unique sailing destination." added Ayala.
There will be eleven classes at this year's event: Racing A & B, Racer-Cruiser, Performance Cruiser, Cruising non-spinnaker, IC-24, J-24, Chalanas, Nativos, Jib & Main and Beach Cats.
The categories for the Culebra International Dinghy Regatta will be: Snipes, Laser and Optimist.
"We will welcome racers from Antigua, Tortola, St. Marteen, St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John, South America, Venezuela and the United Status among others. We have achieved to position Puerto Rico in the Caribbean circuit for which we are confident that the next step will be the union of all the Regattas in the area," concluded Ayala.
