North Sails Regatta
5th Annual North Sails Regatta Champing At The Bit

The BVI's Team Latitude 18 on its way to victory last year
The 5th annual North Sails Regatta to be held on St. Maarten’s Simpson Bay Lagoon over the weekend of June 17 – 18 not only brings together some of the regions leading sailors, it is setting the standard for one-design racing that other islands are now keen to follow.

“The success of the North Sails Regatta has lead to a growth in one-design racing in the Caribbean, with similar regattas in the BVI and Guadeloupe. The model is also being looked at in St. Lucia and Puerto Rico,” said event organizer Robbie Ferron.

The BVI's Team Latitude 18 Tops Fourth Annual North Sails Regatta

The BVI's Team Latitude 18 on its way to victory
Sixteen teams from throughout the Caribbean battled it out on the waters of Simpson Bay Lagoon in St Maarten this weekend (June 18/19) in the fourth annual North Sails Regatta, the Caribbean One Design Keelboat Championship. After three qualifying races and seven championship races in the Gold fleet, the British Virgin Islands' Robby Hirst, with brother Mike and Chris Haycraft as crew, won with 13 points. Robby Hirst also won the event in 2002 with the same crew

Puerto Rico's top racer, Fraito Lugo (Team Orion), was eight points behind and second. Third place by a slimmer margin of three points went to Markku Harmala from Team St Barths Libre. Luc Knol and his Team Enerserve topped the Silver fleet.

St Maarten Prepares For North Sails Regatta
Last weekend, in the regular St Maarten Yacht Club Series, Phillippe Herve proved that he may be the best hope for St Martin in the upcoming North Sails Regatta Caribbean Championships next weekend. To date no St Maarten/St Martin sailor has placed in the first three of the event

Herve was sometimes far ahead of the fleet showing great boatspeed in the typical flukey conditions of the lagoon (Oyster Pond) . His sailing experience includes world championships in the half ton class as well as national French championships. He also has experience helming maxi yachts as well.

The North Sails Caribbean One Design Keelboat Championships
The North Sails Caribbean One Design Keelboat Championships is one of the most competitive one-design regattas in the Caribbean. The regatta takes place in Sint Maarten on June 18th and 19th. This year sponsor North Sails will be providing new jibs just for the regatta.

USVI’s John Holmberg Tops St Maarten’s North Sails Regatta
It came down to the last boat lengths of the last leg of the last day of the third annual North Sails Regatta, the Caribbean One Design Keelboat Championship held this weekend (June 26,27) in St Maarten; four boats were in contention to win with myriad permutations for winning.

The USVI’s John Holmberg crossed the line finish line first but it was Antiguan Karl James’ second place and Rosenberg’s third place that secured his overall win by putting two places between Holmberg and Green. Excruciatingly, Green had been second to Holmberg around the course until the last seconds of the race. The USVI’s Chris Rosenberg needed the same permutation as Holmberg to win. The BVI’s Robbie Hirst needed a win and two boats between him and Green. Green needed a second place to win overall. However, Green did claim second overall and Rosenberg was third. Last year’s winner, Robbie Hirst, was fourth having been “punished by some silly mistakes” particularly on the first day.
