UK's Ian Williams Wins First Championship At Gold Cup

| Mark Nicholls, Gerry Mitchell and Ian Williams won the Gold Cup. | Ian Williams of Great Britain today won the 58th annual King Edward VII Gold Cup with a 3-1 defeat of Frenchman Mathieu Richard.
Williams won the first two races, dropped the third and then closed out the series in the fourth race with a one boatlength victory. He and crew Bill Hardesty (bow and tactics), Gerry Mitchell (headsails) and Mark Nicholls (mainsail) finished with a 13-6 record and won $25,000 of the $50,000 prize purse.

Briton Wins Renre Junior Gold Cup Philip Sparks of Christchurch, England, won the Renaissance Reinsurance Junior Gold Cup with the low score of 14 points. Sparks overcame 34 competitors in the event for junior sailors from 10 nations around the world and Bermuda.
The Junior Gold Cup also was the final regatta of three to select Bermuda's team for the Optimist World Championship. The five sailors are Josh Greenslade, Jordan Saints, Haley Powell, Jason Saints and James Anfossi. They'll represent Bermuda at the Worlds in Montevideo, Uruguay, Dec. 29-Jan. 7, 2007.

Lewin, Walker Take Aim At Gold Cup Successful Bermudian sailors look to win first championship

(Royal Bermuda Yacht Club photo) | Bermudians Paula Lewin and Blythe Walker have competed frequently at the King Edward VII Gold Cup through the years, but never won. They get another chance to correct that next week on Hamilton Harbour.
Lewin and Walker are two of the 16 entrants in the $50,000 Gold Cup regatta, Stage 4 of the 2006-'07 World Match Racing Tour. Racing is scheduled Oct. 11-15 and will be conducted in the International One-Design (IOD), a 33-foot sloop designed in the 1930s.

4th annual Junior Gold Cup Features 37 Teams Event to determine Bermuda's team for Optimist Worlds at end of year.
The fourth annual Renaissance Reinsurance Junior Gold Cup, Oct. 12-15, will feature 12 sailors from around the world and up to 25 Bermudian entrants in four days of racing in the singlehanded Optimist dinghy.
The Junior Gold Cup will run concurrently with the 58th annual King Edward VII Gold Cup (Oct. 11-15). The events differ in more than just their amateur and professional status. The pros are racing for prize money, but the Junior Gold Cup is about more than racing.

777 Mile Charleston to Bermuda Race Gears Up

| The start of the C2B 2003 race. | Charleston and Bermuda are gearing up for the biannual Charleston to Bermuda Race (C2B). The event is sailed every other year and is sponsored by the South Carolina Maritime Heritage Foundation. The 777 nautical mile challenge of navigational skill and true bluewater sailing departs Charleston Harbor, Saturday, May 14, 2005 setting sail for the island of Bermuda. Katy Durant, event organizer explains, “We are a relatively new blue water race, attempting to appeal to a broad scope of vessels. We intend to become America‚s inclusive race to Bermuda and focus on fun!”
