Barbados
Over the next few months the sailors of Team Sail Barbados 2008 will compete at various international events, as they continue in their bid to qualify the island for the 2008 Games. The highlights of these events will be the International Sailing Federation's World Sailing Championships in Cascais, Portugal and the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship in Canada.
The team currently consists of three athletes, Russell Streeter and Gegory Douglas, who are competing in the Laser dinghy, a hugely popular class locally and internationally, and David McGregor, who is racing the Finn dinghy, one of the oldest of the Olympic classes.
Streeter, who is based in Southampton, England, will this week travel to Holland for his first international event of the year. Following this he will compete at the European Championships in France and Kiel Week in Germany, before heading down to Portugal in early July for the World Sailing Championships. McGregor, also based in England, has already competed at two major Finn events for the year. He was unable to join Streeter in Holland, but will also be competing in Portugal.
The World Sailing Championships are an important event for these two sailors, as it is the first chance they have to qualify the island for the Olympic Games in Beijing. It promises to be the largest event either athlete has ever attended and the compeition will be fierce, with over 60 nations competing.
Douglas, who is attending school in Canada, has a busy schedule of regional and international competitions taking place in North America, starting with the Laser North American Championships and the Canadian Laser Championships, both in June. In July he will compete at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship for the second time. This event will be similar to the Senior event at which Streeter and McGregor are competing, in that it will include many of the Olympic classes and will attract sailors from all over the world. Douglas performed credibly at this event last year, in Weymouth, England, and will be looking to improve his overall results.
