Grenada
The arrival of feeder races from Trinidad & Tobago at Prickly Bay Marina on Thursday 5th April will start the exciting Easter festivities in Grenada. That evening racers, in all classes, will have a chance to way up the competition, and decide the best strategy for winning the races, at the ‘Welcome Party and Registration’ to which the general public is invited.
Prickly Bay and St. George’s University offer ideal vantage points from which to view the boats, on Good Friday, as all classes enjoy two short races starting at 11.30 am, off the delightful south coast of the island. ‘Prickly Bay Marina’s After Race Party’ will feature live music, a culture show and a popular DJ. A two hour happy hour will be followed at 7 pm, by the day’s prize giving ceremony.
Early on Saturday 7th April, as the racing fleet set of on the Round-the-Island Race for the Carib Cup Trophy, the traditional wooden boat fleet will be seen racing around Glover Island and what a sight to behold this will be, as vessels come together for the first time in their home waters.
Built in Windward Carriacou, these classic working boats are a fine example of the skilled craftsmanship that is still very much alive today. A special trophy to commemorate the occasion will be donated by Alexis Andrews the owner of the Carriacou deck sloop Genesis.
In the multihull class the record holder for the fastest time around the island is held by Huff N Puff at 5 hours 50 minutes. This year there is a great challenge to break that record and the chances on Shadowfax, the fast Spronk 60’ doing just that, are very high. The Carib Cup trophy will be presented to the fastest boat around and the Peter Blake Memorial Trophy to the fastest boat on adjusted time.
In Prickly Bay the junior and youth teams will compete for the Port Louis Trophy in the Mosquito, Optimist and Laser dinghies. On the water they will compete in five races each through out the day and ashore there will be activities to introduce new sailors to the sport, rope tying and kite flying competition.
The ‘Prickly Bay Marina Carib Cup Party’ will begin with a happy hour from 6-7 pm and feature live music, steel pan and a DJ.
Sunday will see two more races off the south coast to decide the overall placing for each class. Prizes donated by Budget Marine Store, hotels, restaurants and the supporters of the event will be presented at a memorable evening at the Beach House Restaurant & Bar.
Easter Monday’s ‘Fun in the Sun’ day will also be at the Beach House and will have something for everyone, live music, entertainment and fun games including an Easter Hunt, a fully stocked bar, sun, sand and sea.
