The Mount Gay International One Metre Championships held in Barbados came to a close on Saturday (July 23) afternoon with Jeff Weiss of Newport Beach, California capturing top honours.

Seventeen boats from United States, Canada, St. Lucia and Barbados competed in a total of thirty-six races were held over two and a half days in the steady 10-15 knot breeze off Worthing Beach.

When the sands settled, it was Weiss sailing his new TS2 boat into first place with 78 points over Dane Maingot, also of the United States, with 114 points. Barbados’ top IOM sailor Peter “Rabbit” Allen sailed well to finish third overall with 121 points from Tony Gonsalves who finished fourth on 141 points. Other outstanding performances came from Chris and Garth Durant of Barbados.

The International One Metre Class is the most active R/C class in the world with more than 9,000 boats sailing worldwide. Regattas in the class attract a broad range of racing sailors from retired Olympians to up and coming professional sailors looking to hone their tactical skills.

This regatta was quite successful in this its inaugural year and the organizers and sailors were extremely satisfied with the level of competition and regatta management. Many thanks to the sponsors and volunteers who contributed tremendously to the event’s success. We look forward to a much bigger event next year.
