Silver Bullet, a thirty-foot long high-performance catamaran owned by Robert Povey, successfully defended her title of fastest sailboat around the island, breaking the record she set in 1997. Silver Bullet was competing in Sail Barbados 2005, a race around Barbados organised by the Barbados Sailing Association Inc. and the Barbados Yacht Club, and sponsored by Cingular Wireless and Cariaccess. On 23 January 2005, she clocked a time of 4:40:33, fifteen minutes faster than her 1997 time, and won eleven cases of Mount Gay Extra Old Rum.

Silver Bullet’s record time also earned her crew first place in the Catamaran Class, and they were awarded a VoiceStick from Cariaccess in St. Vincent. In second place was Firefly skippered by Ryan Roach, with a time of 5:10:57, while in third place was Peter Milne’s Phoenix, with a time of 5:36:33.

The fastest single-hulled boat to sail around the island was the 135-foot luxury yacht Destination Fox Harb’r, owned by Canadian businessman Ron Joyce. They clocked a time of 5:25:41, winning 10 cases of Mount Gay Extra Old. They were the sole entrant in the Big Boat Class.

There was keen competition between local sailors in the Racing Class with Ralph Johnson’s Rapajam, Peter Burke’s Blazin and Peter Lewis’ Whistler all in contention for the top prize. However, it was pre-race favourite Rapajam, skippered by Bill Tempro that took line honours and were awarded the Cingular Wireless Trophy and a weekend get-away for two to Beachcombers Hotel in St Vincent. Whistler took second place while Blazin was third.

In the Cruising Class Ron Hunt’s Jaystar dominated and won by a comfortable margin over Richard Inniss’ Fancy Sailor. Hunt was presented with the Cariaccess Cup and two tickets to St Vincent on Caribbean Star, for his success. In third place was Chris Trew’s Resolute.

The event also featured shorter courses for dinghy sailors and attracted five Olympic Lasers, two Laser 2s and six Optimist Dinghies. In the Laser class local champion Charlie Gloumeau was first, though his margin over second-placed Robbie Yearwood from Grenada was only one minute after nearly six hours of racing. Rodney Reader was third. In the Lasers 2s Rodney’s brother Gus Reader got the better of Mike Toy and his crew to take first.

The Optimists were split into two divisions and in the Advanced division racing was close, with Amy Cox beating Sarah Douglas by a mere four seconds to take first place. Philip Mastereid was third. In the Green Fleet, Owen Reader rounded off his family’s strong performance with a win over Matthew Courtis and cousin Lucas Reader.

At the prize giving ceremony held in the evening after the race Anthony Gunn, from Cariaccess and Beachcombers Hotel, thanked all the other sponsors and contributors, including Mount Gay, Banks, Caribbean Star, Beachcomber’s Hotel in St. Vincent, Oceans Restaurant, Lucky Horseshoe and Marine Management Services.

Next year’s event is scheduled to take place on Saturday 21st January 2006. Interested persons can log onto the website or contact the organizers by email.
