Some of the Caribbean's best sailors showed their prowess for light air sailing at the 5th annual Culebra Heineken International Regatta - the second leg of the 2009 Cape Air Caribbean Ocean Racing Triangle (C.O.R.T.) Series - sailed March 20-22, out of Puerto Rico's offshore island of Culebra.
"We hosted registration for the Cape Air C.O.R.T. Series at the Culebra Heineken International Regatta and saw an increase in participation and entry of boats in previously unfilled categories such as IC-24 and Performance Cruiser," says regatta director, Angel Ayala.
Devil 3, the Melges 24 sailed by the Stanton brothers of St. Croix, scored two bullets in three races to lengthen their lead in the Spinnaker A Class.
In Spinnaker B, St. Thomas' Chris Thompson, at the helm of his J/27, J-Walker, held his lead, but tied on points with St. Thomas' John Foster's Kirby 25, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. "There was definitely some tough competition out there, especially in the light winds," says Thompson.
The BVI's Peter Haycraft, driving his Sirena 38, Pipedream, also continues his lead in the Series' Racer-Cruiser Class, while St. Croix Tony Sanpere did the same in the Performance Cruiser Class aboard his J/36, Cayennita Grande. "Of his new boat, Sanpere says, "I got to fly the spinnaker for the first time. That gave us speed on the downwinds."
Puerto Rico's Efrain 'Fraito' Lugo led the IC-24 Class. "We were neck-and-neck with Colin (the BVI's Colin Rathbun on Lime) the whole time."
Finally, St. John, USVI's Steve Schmidt, sailing his Santa Cruz 70, Hotel California, leads the Jib & Main Class.
The 2009 Cape Air C.O.R.T. Series kicked-off at the St. Croix International Regatta in February and concludes at the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival in April.
One of the big attractions for Cape Air C.O.R.T. entry is the chance to win a pair of round-trip tickets aboard Cape Air. These were raffled off in St. Croix and Culebra, and the same will be done at the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival. In addition, at the Series conclusion in the BVI, additional round-trip tickets for two will be awarded to the first place finisher in each of the six Cape Air C.O.R.T. Series Classes: Spinnaker Racing A, Spinnaker Racing B, Racer Cruiser, Performance Cruiser, IC24 and Jib & Main. First, second and third place boats in each of the classes will receive $100, $75 and $50 gift certificates, respectively, from West Marine. The first place finisher in each class will also receive foul weather gear.
