The 2009 St. Croix International Regatta, February 20-22, may be five months off but if you listen closely, you can hear the rumbling as the committee shifts from, “Wasn’t 2008 great”, to “2009 Here we come!”
Like most Caribbean regattas, volunteers staff the St. Croix International Regatta. Although the spring racing season seems a long way off, planning for a successful regatta begins during the summer months and takes dedication and time.
Regatta Director San Martin is taking every opportunity to network with racers, both local and faithful visitors, determining what they would like to see for courses for 2009. To supplement the popular windward leeward courses, the Christiansted Harbor course is still under consideration for the non-spinnaker boats, as well as around the a course around the National Park buoys. Plans are underway for technological upgrades for 2009, particularly in results reporting. “This year (2008), not only did we lose internet connection, our electric utility decided to turn off power for routine maintenance – during the last hour of registration. It was our technology theme for the weekend – nothing worked the way we planned,” laughs Regatta Director, Julie San Martin.
St. Croix Yacht Club Commodore Vicki Bandola has accepted chairmanship of the Regatta Sponsorship committee, adding to her responsibilities as on shore regatta activities manager. Bandola’s appointment relieves other committee members, allowing them to focus on the regatta itself. Other members of the committee include Millie Johnson (merchandise), Karen Stanton (Optimist), Fleet Captain and Race Committee chairman Kim Jones, publicity chair Kelly Simon and club manager, Kiomie Pedrini,
